Renée Lerner
Artist Statement
These 3-dimensional abstract works come from an inner impulse that takes shape from the materials I use and where they are placed. The materials are mostly soft and malleable - easily crushed, twisted and layered and provide contrast in translucency, weight, color and texture. The hard metals and chains counter the soft substances.
Where I place these disparate parts is key to the development of the work. Placement may serve to divide the space providing structure and establishing focal points, or the parts may be free floating with an undefined structure. Placement also provides movement and direction. All of which combined, form a cohesive work to be experienced.
And it is all about process, because I do not start a work with a specific vision in mind. It is only after I choose and place the materials that I step back to see if the piece is working for me. If not, I play around and make changes until I am satisfied.
How do I know the work has come to a plausible conclusion? If it makes sense to me; if I respond to it and it says, “I can live with you.”
These works are evidence of an overall need to express an inner emotion within an aesthetic composition. Choice, process, realization. It all makes for a great adventure.
